Meteor Logo Process
Imagining a brand for the next generation of the web framework.

Meteor is an impressive front & backend Javascript framework focused on fast development across devices. In April of 2014, they were hiring a designer to lead their rebrand. I wanted to bring their attention to my application, so I spent some time on ideating a new logo.Below are the results of a weekend of sketching. In keeping the light on how I work, I'm going to include the good, bad and ugly.

Logomark Concepts

A logo carries a heavy burden these days. It needs to convey the idea of the organization across varying contexts. From the favicon or twitter avatar to the banner at SXSW, a good logo is legible and expressive in every instance.

Refining 7-lines Mark

After finding a good concept for the mark, I refined the form and took time to explore logotype options with tests of different orientations and sizes.

  1. Original
  2. Rotate to 45° angle. Adds of speed and movement.
  3. Round the front to make it more meteor-like.
  4. Refine line intervals and overall shape.

 Logotype Exploration

Meteor is a forward-thinking framework. I looked at five geometric sans typefaces for their perpetual progressive style.

Neutraface 2 Demi    Meteor is a forward-thinking framework. I tried geometric sans for their progressiveness.

Brandon Grotesque  — Uppercase gives more authority. Rounded corners of the type works with the rounded lines of the mark. But the angles of the “M” jar with the mark’s 45° angle, making it loud and distracting.

Pluto Sans   This is a great typeface for meteor. Clean and balanced with a little bit of spacey futurism.

Gotham Rounded   The best of both worlds. Similar letter forms to Pluto Sans but with rounded corners.

With the weekend coming to end, I wanted to explore a few applications of the logo. Images link to larger versions.

Nothing came from my application but I enjoyed working on an visual identity for Meteor. I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing some of the process.
